A quiet trade, kept by many hands.
मुनि — muni — is an old word for a sage: someone who has taken a vow of quiet and lets the work speak instead. We borrowed it because it describes the people we work with better than any marketing line could. A Gond artist outlines a painting first and gives the figures their eyes last. A brass caster finishes a lamp by hand, one curve at a time. Neither talks much about it; they keep doing the work.
CraftMuni does two things. We turn your stories into Gond paintings, made to order, and we carry ready-made pieces from India’s makers to homes outside it. Nothing here is mass-produced, and no two pieces come out quite the same. We think that unevenness is the point, not a flaw to be engineered out.
What we make.
Gond story paintings
Tell us a memory in a sentence. We sketch it free, you choose, and a Gond artist paints it by hand on a 24 × 24 in canvas: $449 (early-bird), about 4–6 weeks.
Tell your story →Cast brass
Diyas for the puja room, a palm-sized Lakshmi, enamelled bud vases and a South Indian filter coffee set, each photographed as it is.
Shop brass →Natural dyes
Cotton dyed in indigo by hand, so no two pieces take the colour quite the same way.
Shop natural dyes →On the workbench · Pottery & Ceramics, Hand-block Textiles, Jali Wood Carving, Hand-dyed Muslin. We add a craft once we have pieces we’re proud to photograph.
A story form, before it was a painting.
The Pardhan Gond of Madhya Pradesh were bards: a family's history was something you sang. The painted form kept that job — one canvas, one story.
In the 1980s Jangarh Singh Shyam put the form on paper and canvas. Each artist since fills shapes with their own mark — seeds, scales, comb-lines — so a trained eye can name the painter from the fill.
Today's artists work in acrylic on primed canvas. Outline first, fill next, eyes last — the belief being that sight is what brings a figure to life.
Made in India, kept honest.
Every piece ships from India with free tracked shipping to the United States, the European Union and across India. US prices include import duties, so nothing is due on delivery. We don’t ship to the United Kingdom yet. Details are on Shipping & Returns.
Our photographs show the actual piece, not a retouched ideal. We’d rather tell you a repair is possible than sell you something disposable. If you want to know more about a piece, who made it or how, write to sales@craftmuni.com. We keep the answers short, the way the makers would.
